When it came to planning my wedding back in 2012, the fiancee came first, the venue second and the shoes third…
Men will never understand the thought and planning that goes into choosing the perfect shoes to get married in…maybe it is Disney’s fault. Us girls are brought up with stories of Cinderella and those glass slippers…
Having photographed lots of stylish brides over the past few years I have seen some truly knock out bridal shoes and picked up lots of tips of what to consider when choosing the right shoes for you. So here is my top 5 tips for choosing the perfect wedding shoes…
1. GO FOR WOW
These aren’t everyday shoes, these are THE shoes, so go for something that truly excites you.
I love sparkly shoes and those with detail. Check out these stunners from Badgley Mischka. Bride Katie found the only supplier in London after she fell in love with these shoes on pinterest.
2. HOW TALL DO YOU WANT TO BE?
Okay, so we all love the glamorous high shoes but how tall is your partner? You may wish to consider your respective heights for your wedding portraits. If you are blessed with supermodel height, or you crave comfort, a low heel or wedge heel, could be the answer for you.
You are likely to be on your feet all day and possibly on the dance floor most of the night so be kind to your feet…
3. BOLD & BRIGHT COLOURS ALONG WITH DETAIL CAN BE GREAT IN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Irregular choice is a very popular brand amongst my brides. Their shoes are quirky, often colourful brides enjoy wearing them again and again after the wedding.
Match your shoes with your accessories. Sometimes keeping it classic and simple is everything you need…
4. CONSIDER YOUR VENUE
What type of venue are you getting married in? Are your portraits going to be taken outside? I have photographed wedding portraits on beaches, in forests and in cattle sheds to name a few, and always advise my brides to plan their footwear.
For fields, farms or beaches I recommend a pair of stylish wellies.
I cannot recommend Hunter Wellies highly enough…I have now owned three pairs and they are so comfortable and stylish.
Consider flats or flip flops for the evening…
5. GET ON EBAY OR PRELOVED FOR DESIGNER GEMS AT DISCOUNTED PRICES
If you are on a strict budget and you think those designer shoes you love are out of reach, consider sample sales or buying second hand. Some outlet villages and bridal shops have sample sales with up to 80% off. Most brides wear their wedding shoes for one day and some only for a few hours so don’t be afraid to look at preloved shoes found on sites like Ebay. Some may even have been purchased and never worn!
So what were my wedding shoes like? Well, I opted for a practical but stunning pair of vintage Jimmy Choos. A small heel with diamonte crystals on the strap gave me the perfect blend of WOW, detail and comfort!
