PERFECT WEDDING HAIR

In this article – professional hair stylist Lisa Frost shares with us her top tips and insider secrets for creating your perfect wedding hair.

“After being a stylist in a salon for my whole career, branching out more into the bridal hair industry I came across a few OMG moments that I wanted to share with you all.

In the salon our clients always get good, well balanced, even hair cuts; their hair coloured using gentle, organic colours so the condition is not compromised.  The majority of our clients also use the products we use in the salon at home. This “perfect canvas” is not possible when new bridal clients approach me to work with them.   I wish I could have advised all my brides earlier as to their cuts, colours and products in the lead up to their wedding.   Here are some of my top tips when it comes to planning your perfect bridal hair style…

1.  LOOK AFTER YOUR HAIR

Make sure you are using the right products for your hair type.  Don’t just guess as to which shampoo, conditioner or treatments match your hair type, seek advice.   So often clients come to me using products which are not right for their hair resulting in hair that can be too oily or very static leaving the condition worse. You can not beat a good salon brand.  I know they are more expensive, but get the right stuff and I guarantee you will not regret it. These companies spend thousands of pounds on research each year and because of this your hair feels stronger, has more of a shine and just has more “life” about it.   Any good hairdresser will know their products like the back of their hand so will be able to help you get the right products for your hair.

2.  COLOUR

Hair colour totally changes the look of a hairstyle.  The same style can look completely different on blonde hair compared to dark hair.

Generally the darker the hair, the more detail is hidden.   In the lead up to the wedding, I often advise my brides with darker hair to consider subtle highlights or tones to enhance the look of the style, especially if it is going to be textured.  On the other hand, if you are opting for a smooth, sleek style, darker hair works really well as it reflects light much better and looks more shiny.

3. UPDO OR DOWN DO?

Lots of brides come to me with photos of fabulous down styles with beautiful curls and lots of volume,  however you will need to consider your hair type and the type of wedding day you are having.      If you are considering a down style you need to think about how long your hair will be on the day in its natural state.  When curled your hair can lose up to a third of its length.    How well does your hair curl and how long will your hair retain those curls?   No amount of hairspray will make curls stay in place all day and if you have a long wedding day by the evening your hair is unlikely to look like it did when styled earlier in the day.

Consider how thick your hair is;  fine hair can sometimes look just as fine when its curled and can appear fluffy, where as thicker hair can be heavy and curls fall out sooner.  Human hair clip in extensions are a great way to achieve that gorgeous down style you’ve always wanted. They can add length, they curl really well and add support to your actual hair when it gets curled which helps it to last longer and of course they add that thickness, all without damaging your hair and scalp.

4.  CONSULTATION

Look for a stylist who offers a bridal consultation separate to your hair trial.  It sounds silly but have your consultation early – as far away from your wedding as you can. This is just an initial chat to talk about what you are considering for your perfect style.   Your stylist will be able to advise you on what to do with your cut and colour in the months before your wedding, suggesting products you might be interested in to improve the condition of your hair and the likelihood of needing extensions etc.   Your stylist will know what needs to be done between your consultation and your big day so your hair looks its absolute best on your wedding day.

5. HAIRSTYLE INSPIRATION.

When you’re searching Pinterest or Instagram for ideas for THE hairstyle make sure you are looking at photos where the person has similar hair colour, length, texture, thickness to your own as this gives you a much better idea of how it will look on you.  Whilst inspiration pictures are helpful to assist you showing your stylist what hair styles you are drawn to;   I’ve lost count of the amount of times a client has shown me photo ideas where the hair in picture is nothing like their own! The other thing worth mentioning here is that unless your hair behaves the same as the person in the picture and your stylist knows exactly how that style was created, it’s quite unlikely that it will be a perfect copy.  Your stylist should take into account everything about you.  Your dress, your face shape, the length of your neck, the size of your head, your hairline, shoulder width, your height etc. Everything has to be thought about otherwise the look may not be right for you.   This is why a hair trial before the big day is so important.

I sincerely hope you find these hair tips useful as you plan your wedding hair.    Please contact me if you would like any further advice I’m only too happy to help and would love to hear about ideas you have for your own wedding hair.”

10 Top Tips For Memorable Wedding Decorations & Favours

10 Top Tips For Memorable Wedding Decorations & Favours

1.   CHOOSE A THEME

Start with a genre – what do you want the overall look and feel of your wedding to be?   Vintage? Classic?   Elegant?  Country?   Beach?  Boho?    Some couples prefer to base their wedding on their favourite film or book.

Dave & Becky’s Beauty & the Beast theme wowed their guests.

2.  CHOOSE YOUR COLOURS

What colours are you drawn to?  What colours would you like for your bridal party?  What colours will your flowers be?    Once you know what your key colours are you can begin to select other items in complimentary colours.

3. CREATE AN INSPIRATION BOARD

Begin to cut out magazine pictures and inspiration to make a board either in a wedding folder or on pinterest (which allows you to pin images you find online onto a virtual board).  By beginning to do this you will identify what you are drawn to and can begin to source your products.

4.  GET SHOPPING

The Range has a good selection of wedding items.  You can pick up some bargains on Ebay, Amazon and Wish.com.      Many couples consider hiring items for their big day and there are many companies who specialise in this.

5.   MAKING FAVOURS YOURSELF CAN BE REWARDING

Many brides say how rewarding it was making their own decorations and favours.    In recent years I’ve been so impressed with the wedding range stocked at Hobbycraft.   They offer variety of wedding favours, silk flowers and frames to enable you to create personal, memorable wedding decorations.

The traditional favour of five sugared almonds in organiza, tied with a ribbon, given to female guests symbolizing health, wealth, happiness, long life & fertility is still an affordable, popular option.  The most well received modern favours I have seen include homemade jams, gin and soap.

The handpainted shells suited Liz & Henry’s wedding on the north norfolk coast.

  6.  THE MORE PERSONALISED; THE MORE MEMORABLE

The wedding favours that stand out to me are the more personal ones, many of which I still think back to from five years ago.  The ones created with love (& often alot of patience!).  The hand painted shell’s for place settings at Liz & Henry’s wedding, the hand stitched favours from Glen & Kate’s wedding and the sweet favours at Rowan and Katie’s country wedding to name but a few…   My husband and I married in the year of the London olympics and as he is a sports journalist we personalised our wedding tables naming them after sport stars.  Not the most romantic of concepts but it was true to us and memorable according to our guests.

7.  LOOK AT WHAT YOUR VENUE CAN OFFER

Some venues provide tables, chairs, wine glasses, candles, cutlery, candlebra’s etc included in your hire fee…  Other venues require you to make arrangements yourselves.    Once you have found your venue and what items you have to work with you can then build upon this.   It may be possible to take the flowers from the ceremony room to another room for evening reception for example.   If your wedding is taking place outdoors there will be less need for floral decorations if you are surrounded by flowers.   If you are lacking inspiration, don’t panic!  Ask your venue’s co-ordinator who is likely to have photographs showing examples of how other couples have decorated the space.

8.  DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE BOLD WITH COLOURS…

Adding a pop of colour looks great in your wedding photography.

Kriston & Nikki’s wedding cake topper remains one of my favourites, perfectly personal for swim teacher, Kriston.

9.  CONSIDER INCORPORATING LOVED ONES WHO COULDN’T BE THERE

Whether it is a reserved chair, a wreath of flowers at the alter of the church, a locket in the brides bouquet or a framed print hanging on the wall of a loved one watching the festivities… it is these little touches that I always remember.  We can’t always have our loved ones physically present with us but there are so many ways that they can be incorporated to share in the happiness and joy of the wedding day.

10.  DON’T FORGET THE KIDS

If you have children attending your wedding, consider favours for them such as crayons and a small colouring book, bubbles or a small game they can play with.  Their parents will forever be grateful!

Finally remember on your wedding day take the time together to go and see the room before your guests come in. Enjoy the sight of all your planning, decisions and hard work creating the perfect backdrop to your day.

Meet Nicole, mum to baby Joshua who arrived less than 24 hours after our outdoor maternity session.   We opted for a field of gold as Nicole told me these colours always make her feel ‘happy’ and visually they are beautiful.   During our preparations Nicole changed into one of my beautiful maternity dresses and a few minutes later took a call from the hospital asking her to bring her C-section date forward.  We knew that the following day she would have a brother or sister to daughter, Amelia.   This made this session all the more special.  Here are the highlights of this special session…

5 TIPS FOR FINDING THE PERFECT WEDDING SHOE

5 TIPS FOR FINDING THE PERFECT WEDDING SHOE

When it came to planning my wedding back in 2012, the fiancee came first, the venue second and the shoes third…

Men will never understand the thought and planning that goes into choosing the perfect shoes to get married in…maybe it is Disney’s fault. Us girls are brought up with stories of Cinderella and those glass slippers…

Having photographed lots of stylish brides over the past few years I have seen some truly knock out bridal shoes and picked up lots of tips of what to consider when choosing the right shoes for you. So here is my top 5 tips for choosing the perfect wedding shoes…

1. GO FOR WOW

These aren’t everyday shoes, these are THE shoes, so go for something that truly excites you.

I love sparkly shoes and those with detail. Check out these stunners from Badgley Mischka. Bride Katie found the only supplier in London after she fell in love with these shoes on pinterest.

2. HOW TALL DO YOU WANT TO BE?

Okay, so we all love the glamorous high shoes but how tall is your partner? You may wish to consider your respective heights for your wedding portraits. If you are blessed with supermodel height, or you crave comfort, a low heel or wedge heel, could be the answer for you.

Perhaps consider a kitten heel like bride Liz…

You are likely to be on your feet all day and possibly on the dance floor most of the night so be kind to your feet…

A wedge can provide comfort and being extremely stylish, like bride Lauren.

3. BOLD & BRIGHT COLOURS ALONG WITH DETAIL CAN BE GREAT IN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Be bold with bright colours like bride Sarah, teamed with classic accessories…

Irregular choice is a very popular brand amongst my brides. Their shoes are quirky, often colourful brides enjoy wearing them again and again after the wedding.

Irregular choice shoes are a firm favourite amongst brides.

Match your shoes with your accessories. Sometimes keeping it classic and simple is everything you need…

4. CONSIDER YOUR VENUE

What type of venue are you getting married in? Are your portraits going to be taken outside? I have photographed wedding portraits on beaches, in forests and in cattle sheds to name a few, and always advise my brides to plan their footwear.

For fields, farms or beaches I recommend a pair of stylish wellies.

Bridal Hunter wellies…does it get any better for wedding portraits on the beach?

I cannot recommend Hunter Wellies highly enough…I have now owned three pairs and they are so comfortable and stylish.

Consider flats or flip flops for the evening…

Or even treat your guests to ensure they are on the dance floor all night long…

5. GET ON EBAY OR PRELOVED FOR DESIGNER GEMS AT DISCOUNTED PRICES

If you are on a strict budget and you think those designer shoes you love are out of reach, consider sample sales or buying second hand. Some outlet villages and bridal shops have sample sales with up to 80% off. Most brides wear their wedding shoes for one day and some only for a few hours so don’t be afraid to look at preloved shoes found on sites like Ebay. Some may even have been purchased and never worn!

So what were my wedding shoes like? Well, I opted for a practical but stunning pair of vintage Jimmy Choos. A small heel with diamonte crystals on the strap gave me the perfect blend of WOW, detail and comfort!
